Voorheen een zandbak in de kamer, sinds afgelopen weekeinde een ruimte waarvan ik bijna ga geloven dat het ooit een woonkamer kan worden. Het voelt als een enorme stap vooruit, zo’n vloer.
Previously a sandbox in the room, since last weekend a space from which I start to believe it can be a living room in the future. It feels like a huge step forward, having a floor.
Een drukke week achter de rug, met veel leuke bezoekjes aan leuke mensen. Ondertussen is er ook geklust in huis en staat de prachtige Smeg-vriezer eindelijk op zijn plek. Vandaag hebben we gezellig bijgekletst en heerlijk gegeten bij vrienden Daisy en William. Zoon Tim is een masterchef in de dop zoals jullie zien. Daisy had een lief cadeau: ze leest mijn blog regelmatig en gaf me daarom bovenstaande kaart: geweldig!
I’ve had a busy week, with tons of visits to nice people. In the meantime there has been some work going on at home and the beautiful Smeg freezer finally stands in it’s place. Today we’ve chatted up and had a delicious meal with our friends Daisy and William. Their son Tim is a budding master-chef as you can see. Daisy had a sweet gift: she reads my blog regularly and gave me a card which says ‘I count my blessings’: so nice!

Onze vakantie is fijn: we wisselen het doen van achterstallige klussen af met leuke dingen en doen dit alles op een rustig tempo. Mijn moeder kwam een dag helpen: we hebben de muren van de woonkamer, gang en trapgat voorgelijmd en alle muren passen tijdelijk bij de seventies keuken. Als beloning voor het harde werk bestelden we heerlijke sushi.
Our holiday is turning out nice: we are doing some tasks, fun things and doing this at a relaxed pace. My mum came to help for a day: we have been fixating the walls of the living room, hallway and stairwell with size and all the walls suit the seventies kitchen momentarily. Een paar dagen later dan gepland maar zoals beloofd, een sfeer-impressie van mijn tour in De Gruyter Fabriek. Ik merk dat ik vrijwel alleen foto’s maakte van puin en oud. Ik vrees dat ik te lang in de verbouwing woon, ik raak verliefd op verval!
De Gruyter is een oude Nederlandse kruideniersketen, opgericht in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Mijn schoonvader werkte in de fabriek, bij de technische dienst. En hij is niet de enige hier in de omgeving wiens geschiedenis overlapt met het bedrijf. In de jaren ’70 werd het noodlijdende bedrijf overgenomen door Spar en de fabriek verloor zijn functie. Een paar jaar geleden zag een groep investeerders wel wat in het pand en zij begonnen een grootscheepse renovatie. Hun doel is het bouwen van een centrum voor de creatieve ondernemer. En voor een heel groot deel is dat al gelukt.
A few days later than planned, but as promised, an impression of my tour in De Gruyter Fabriek. I noticed I mostly took pictures of mortar and rubble. I’m afraid I have been living on the building site for way too long: I’ve started to fall in love with decay!
De Gruyter is an old chain of Dutch grocery stores founded in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. My father in law used to work in the De Gruyter factory, at the technical department. And he is not the only one around here with a history that overlaps with this company. In the 1970s a chain of supermarkets took over and the factory lost it’s purpose. A few years ago a group of investors saw potential in the building and started renovating. Their goal is to be a centre for the cultural entrepreneur. And for a large part they have succeeded already.
Wij kunnen sinds kort ook beneden naar het toilet: wat een luxe. Helemaal als er klusvolk in huis is, dan heb ik de bovenverdieping gewoon lekker voor mezelf.
Since a little while we can go to the toilet downstairs too: what a luxury. Especially when there are people working downstairs, I have the upper floors all to myself.
De Amerikaanse keuken staat (in de primer) in proefopstelling. De deurtjes worden wit, met een van de kleuren op de tweede foto als blad. Het lijkt bijna echt nu.
The American kitchen (in primer coat) is placed in it’s test position. The cabinets will be white, with one of the colors on the second picture as a counter top. It almost looks real now.
Beneden in het stof wordt hard gewerkt: zo krijgt het plafond van de woonkamer steeds meer vorm. We hebben besloten waar we lichtpunten willen en er is geïsoleerd. Het is zo fijn om veranderingen te zien als ik thuis kom van mijn werk. Boven, in de leefruimte, zorg ik ondertussen voor kleur: bloemen in een koffiepot van de rommelmarkt.
Downstairs in the dust I see improvement: the ceiling of the living room for example, gets more shape. We have decided where we want the lights and isolation is put on it’s place. It is such a great feeling to see the changes when I come home from work. Upstairs, I’ve made our living space a bit more colorful by putting some flowers in a coffeepot from the flea market.
Anki started counting her blessings. Anne, Arnika, Belinda, Debora, Esther, Frederieke, Froukje, Judith, Leontien, Maartje, Maartje, Mariëlle, Marit, Martine, Mireille and Tabitha joined in. Today we also welcome Maureen and Marie-Lu.
Op een rommelmarkt op vakantie vond ik dit mandje. Omdat we boven wonen, maar de koelkast en keuken beneden zijn, moeten we vaak met spullen heen en weer. Met de mand kunnen we veel meer in een keer meenemen: ideaal.
On a flea market on my holiday I found this basket. Because we live upstairs but the refrigerator and kitchen are downstairs, we have to take a lot of stuff from one to another. With the basket we can take lot’s more at once: it’s perfect.
Eindelijk voelde het deze week een klein beetje als zomer, met een beetje warmte en leuke mensen om ons heen. Halverwege de week had ik een gezellige en inspirerende blogmiddag. Vrijdag aten we tot ’s avonds laat heerlijke sushi op het terras, samen met Anki en Casper. Ik vond sieraadjes voor 5 cent per stuk bij de kringloop en mijn T’s klusperiode is begonnen: de komende twee maanden heeft hij twee extra vrije dagen per week om aan ons huis te werken. Deze week is er onder andere een gat gemaakt tussen de gang en de toekomstige woonkamer, waar straks de meterkast in wordt weggewerkt. Extra stof in huis, maar vooruitgang is goed!
At last it felt a bit like summer this week. Halfway last week I had a pleasant and inspiring blogafternoon. Friday we ate delicious sushi at a terrace until late in the evening, along with Anki and Casper. I found some jewelry for 5 cents a piece at the thrift store and my T’s DIY-period has started: the forthcoming two months he has two extra days off of work to work on our house. This week he made, amongst other things, a big hole between the hallway and the future living room, for the transformer substation. Some extra dust in the house, but progress feels good!
